Economic Hardship Keeping Nigerian Youths Single, Says UNFPA

During the commemoration of the 2026 World Population Day, Muriel Mafiko, the Nigeria Resident Representative of UNFPA, stated that many Nigerian youths desire to start families but face barriers such as unemployment, rising living costs, insecurity, and unequal access to education and healthcare. Mafiko emphasized that uncertainty, rather than unwillingness, is causing young people to hesitate in starting families.

She called for government support through inclusive investments that protect youth rights and expand their choices. Dr.

Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the National Population Commission, noted that approximately 70% of Nigeria's population is under the age of 30, which presents significant opportunities for innovation and economic growth. However, he cautioned that a youthful population does not automatically lead to a demographic dividend without appropriate policies in place.
