Youth Delay Marriage Due to Economic Hardship in Nigeria

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) conducted a survey indicating that many youths in Nigeria are single due to economic and housing constraints. During the 2026 World Population Day commemoration, UNFPA’s Nigeria Resident Representative, Muriel Mafiko, stated that despite a longing for family, barriers such as unemployment, rising living costs, insecurity, and unequal access to education and healthcare limit their choices.

The survey revealed that most respondents idealize marriage and desire children, with two being the preferred family size. However, uncertainty about housing stability and care for children leads to hesitation in starting families.

Mafiko stressed the need for governments to create conditions that empower youth to make informed decisions about their futures. Dr.

Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the National Population Commission, noted that approximately 70% of Nigeria's population is under 30, presenting opportunities for innovation and economic growth.
