Nigeria's Youth Face Unemployment Amid UN's Global Theme

The United Nations has designated ‘Different Contexts, Common Aspirations’ as the theme for the 2026 International Youth Day, focusing on global solidarity. However, Nigeria has not organized any government activities to align with this agenda.

The UN predicts that by 2050, Nigeria will be among the most populous countries, intensifying the existing challenges of infrastructure and living standards. The nation has struggled to provide sufficient jobs for its youth, leading to widespread economic hardship and poverty.

The UN report indicates that young people globally face pressures such as limited access to education and decent work. In Nigeria, the increasing number of out-of-school children and unemployed graduates reflects a lack of investment in youth.

President Bola Tinubu has attributed the high unemployment rate to a rapidly growing population that has outpaced job creation, stating, “Nigerians are not lazy; the problem has been a lack of job opportunities.”.
