Economic Hardship Prevents Youth from Starting Families

A major survey released by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Tuesday reveals that economic hardship is a significant barrier preventing young people from starting families. The survey, which included responses from 108,000 internet-connected adults aged 18-39 across 73 countries and territories, found that financial security, stable employment, and housing are the primary obstacles to forming partnerships and parenthood.

Dien Keita, the Executive Director of UNFPA, stated that breaking down financial barriers is essential for supporting young people's aspirations. The survey indicated that two-thirds of respondents desire marriage or a live-in partnership, with nearly 80% considering partnership a prerequisite for parenthood.

However, about one-quarter of respondents prefer to remain single and not date. Overall, 57% identified economic and housing constraints as the biggest barriers to marriage and stable cohabitation.

The findings reflect the challenges faced by young people, particularly young women in India, who prioritize finding the right partner to share responsibilities in raising children.
