ECOWAS Boosts Ebola Preparedness After DRC Outbreak

ECOWAS is strengthening its Ebola preparedness in response to the 17th outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak was confirmed by the DRC Ministry of Health, with laboratory tests revealing eight positive cases of the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

Dr. Mamadou Diarrassouba, the Executive Director of the Regional Centre for Surveillance and Disease Control, emphasized the severity of the Ebola virus disease, which can have a mortality rate of up to 50%.

Although vaccines exist for the Zaire strain, there are currently no approved vaccines for the Bundibugyo variant. ECOWAS is advising governments to enhance laboratory readiness, strengthen emergency response teams, and improve infection prevention measures.

Public awareness campaigns are recommended to discourage unnecessary travel and promote hygiene practices. The organization continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
