Ed Sheeran Critiques Gaza Situation Amid Macklemore Controversy

During a concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal from his US tour, labeling the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.” This followed Macklemore's pro-Palestinian remarks during a performance at MetLife Stadium on September 4, which led to his removal from the remaining dates of Sheeran's Loop Tour due to objections from venue owners. Sheeran stated that he had not intended to become an “activist musician” but felt compelled to engage in the debate over free speech and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

He expressed regret over how the situation was handled and warned against venues dictating performers' speech. Sheeran condemned the Hamas attacks in October 2023 as “horrific” and criticized the ongoing situation in Gaza as disproportionate.

His comments marked a shift from his previous stance that concerts should focus solely on music rather than political discourse.
