Edo Assembly Proposes New Board for Secondary Education

The Edo State House of Assembly has initiated a legislative overhaul of the state's secondary education system by proposing the repeal of the 1988 Bendel State Education Edict. This move aims to establish an Edo State Secondary School Board responsible for administering senior secondary schools.

House Majority Leader Hon. Ojezelle Osezua stated that the old edict is inconsistent with contemporary societal needs, emphasizing the necessity for laws to evolve. The proposed board would work alongside the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), which oversees primary and junior secondary education.

The bill received support from Minority Leader Hon. Natasha Osawaru Idibia and other lawmakers, who highlighted the importance of modernizing education laws. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Education, chaired by Hon. Donald Okogbe, for further consideration.

This reform positions Edo among states seeking to adapt their education governance structures to meet changing demands in the sector.
