Edo Deputy Speaker Blames Cable Theft for Blackouts

Osamwonyi Atu, the Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, has blamed cable thieves for the ongoing blackouts affecting his constituency, including Abudu. Speaking to journalists in Benin City, he noted that infrastructure vandalism has been a significant challenge over the past 15 years, hindering power supply.

Atu, a member of the All Progressives Congress, assured constituents of his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises, despite facing constraints due to vandalism. He listed various projects undertaken during his tenure, including the construction and renovation of schools, provision of boreholes, installation of solar street lights, and the establishment of community halls.

Additionally, he mentioned educational support initiatives, including 100 scholarships for students. Atu also accused opposition elements of attempting to create unrest during recent electoral activities.

He confirmed that projects would continue to benefit the community, emphasizing the importance of peace and collaboration. Henri Dafe, the regional head of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, noted that ongoing projects were severely impacted by theft and vandalism.
