Edo State Launches Roadmap for Universal Health Coverage

The Edo State Government has launched a roadmap aimed at achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through enhanced primary healthcare services. Governor Monday Okpebholo unveiled this initiative on Thursday at the Edo SHINE Primary Healthcare Summit 2026 in Benin City, with Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, the Commissioner for Health, representing him.

The summit gathered policymakers, healthcare professionals, and development partners to discuss strategies for improving healthcare delivery. Okpebholo emphasized that primary healthcare is crucial for UHC, serving as the first point of contact for citizens.

He noted the administration's focus on healthcare investments, digital health solutions, and partnerships, particularly with the World Bank-supported IMPACT Project. Despite acknowledging challenges such as workforce shortages and financing gaps, he called for collaboration among local governments, traditional institutions, and civil society to ensure equitable healthcare access.

Additionally, he highlighted Benin City's recognition for its innovative healthcare model, which won the $1 million Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge in February 2026.
