Edo Miners Accuse NSCDC of Harassment and Extortion

During the Edo State Chapter of Miners Association's annual general meeting held on Wednesday in Auchi, Alhaji Fatai Jimoh, the acting chairman, accused the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) of harassing and extorting its members, particularly concerning royalty payments for pulverized mineral materials. Jimoh stated that NSCDC's special marshals have created unrest within the sector by imposing unjustified levies and intimidating miners.

The association is currently addressing issues related to the classification of pulverized dolomite and marble, which are critical for royalty payments. NSCDC spokesman Efosa Ogbebor denied the allegations, asserting that no formal complaints have been filed and that the miners have not provided credible evidence of extortion.

Omoruyi Martina, the permanent secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Mines, emphasized the need for collaboration between the ministry and mining operators to ensure the sector thrives. The meeting highlighted the challenges posed by illegal mining, which undermines legitimate operations and creates market disadvantages.
