Edo State Launches Electricity Regulatory Commission

The Edo State Commissioner for Energy, Paul Usenbo, announced the establishment of the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ESERC) as a significant move to enhance the state's control over its electricity market. Usenbo commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for this initiative, stating that the commission would strengthen Edo's capacity to shape its electricity sector to better meet the needs of residents, businesses, and industries.

Effective August 21, 2024, regulatory authority over the state's intrastate electricity market will transition from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to ESERC, in line with the amended Electricity Act. This transition marks a pivotal change in managing Edo's electricity market, allowing the state to create and implement policies tailored to its unique economic and social conditions.

Usenbo clarified that this regulatory shift does not equate to the completion of the full capitalization and restructuring of the distribution business, emphasizing the need for proper identification and transfer of assets and liabilities. He called for collaboration among authorities to ensure the transition leads to practical reforms and improved electricity services.
