Edo Refinery Surpasses 100% Capacity, Leads Diesel Supply

In September 2026, Edo Refinery surpassed 100% capacity utilization, achieving an average of 104.24%, making it Nigeria's best-performing modular refinery. It supplied 620,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, daily.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reported that while Edo Refinery excelled, Walter Smith Refinery was the largest diesel producer, averaging 290,000 litres daily. Other refineries, Aradel and OPAC, produced significantly less, with 140,000 litres each, while Duport Refinery was shut down during this period.
The report indicated a 40% decline in average daily diesel receipts, dropping from 14.5 million litres in August to 8.7 million litres in September. Domestic diesel receipts fell by 39%, and imports decreased by 54%.
Despite these challenges, Nigeria maintained a diesel stock sufficiency of 49.7 days. The NMDPRA cited feedstock challenges and maintenance shutdowns as issues affecting smaller refineries.
