NDLEA Enlists Oba of Benin's Support for Cannabis Farmers

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has requested the support of the Oba of Benin, HRM Ewuare II, for its Alternative Development Initiative, which aims to persuade cannabis farmers to transition to legitimate agricultural activities. The NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), stated that the initiative would encourage farmers to grow crops like cassava, yam, and maize, providing necessary support for sustainable livelihoods.
This program addresses the economic challenges faced by cannabis farmers by offering viable alternatives and reducing the fear of arrest. Marwa mentioned that Nigeria is the first African country to adopt this strategy, which has the endorsement of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Federal Government.
The initiative is currently being piloted in three communities in Ondo State. Marwa also discussed the proposal with the Edo State governor, who expressed optimism about extending the initiative to cannabis-growing communities in Edo.
The program will also include infrastructure improvements and basic social amenities.
