EFCC Denies Assault Claims at Uyo Teaching Hospital

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied allegations of assaulting staff at Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) during an operation on May 12, 2026. The EFCC clarified that the operation was purely administrative, aimed at obtaining authentic medical reports related to suspects accused of defrauding multiple microfinance banks, including the University of Uyo Microfinance Bank.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated that no individuals were arrested during the operation, challenging the hospital to provide evidence of any alleged brutality. The agency acknowledged the concerns raised by stakeholders and assured the public that the incident was an aberration.

An inquiry is underway to investigate the operational standards of the EFCC staff involved. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to combating corruption while respecting the rights of all Nigerians.
