EFCC Addresses Rising Internet Fraud Among Youths in Ekiti

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised alarms regarding the increasing involvement of young people, including secondary school students, in internet fraud in Ekiti. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, an indigene of Ikere-Ekiti, reported that many teenagers are abandoning their education to pursue quick wealth through scams.

He highlighted alarming behaviors, such as students leaving school early to engage in fraudulent activities and driving vehicles. Olukoyede warned that some of these individuals are also involved in more serious crimes, including banditry and kidnapping, and are being used to launder funds linked to politically exposed persons.

The EFCC's operations in Ekiti have led to concerns among local hotel and entertainment business operators about decreased patronage. However, EFCC Head of Media and Publicity Dele Oyewale refuted claims of harassment, stating that the commission aims to support legitimate businesses and eliminate threats to lawful operations.
