EFCC Withdraws Cybercrime Charges Against Two Nigerians

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), led by Chairman Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the withdrawal of cybercrime charges against Maryam Isah Shehu and Abubakar Shuraim Abdulhamad. The two were arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday for alleged cybercrime and disseminating malicious information against the Commissioner of Police.

The EFCC considered the charges to be in violation of Section 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015 (As Amended) 2024, which is punishable under Section 24(2)(c)(ii) of the same Act. However, following heartfelt pleas and apologies from Shehu's father and appeals from concerned Nigerians, the EFCC Chairman decided to drop the charges.

He also warned that the EFCC would not tolerate any deliberate attacks on its image in any form. Dele Oyewale, EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, confirmed that the Commission remains committed to its mandate and the nation's best interests.
