Ebi Egbe Calls for Urgent Reform in Nigeria Football

Ebi Egbe, a Nigerian football administrator and sports facilities expert, has demanded an urgent overhaul of Nigeria's football framework, attributing the nation's ongoing struggles to structural weaknesses rather than a lack of talent. He stated, “There is hardly any doubt that Nigerian football is sick and requires urgent surgical intervention,” following disappointing results from national teams.

The Super Eagles have not qualified for two consecutive FIFA World Cups, and the Super Falcons missed the Women’s World Cup for the first time since its inception in 1991. Additionally, the Golden Eaglets have missed three consecutive editions of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Egbe emphasized that these failures are symptoms of deeper issues and called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and stakeholders to rethink the football development model, addressing areas such as grassroots football, talent identification, coaching, and player welfare. He welcomed the NFF's initiative to form a fact-finding committee but stressed the need for actionable implementation of its findings, advocating for a roadmap with clear responsibilities and accountability.
