Eight Soldiers Killed in ISWAP Raid on Borno Base

On Monday, a deadly raid by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base near Kauwa in Borno resulted in the deaths of eight Nigerian soldiers and injuries to 23 others. According to security sources, approximately 70 insurgents on motorcycles launched the attack, leading to fierce gun battles.

The military base, located 24 kilometers from the fishing hub of Baga, was reportedly overrun and set ablaze by the insurgents. This assault is part of a renewed wave of attacks by ISWAP and its rival, Boko Haram, across northeastern Nigeria.

The previous weekend, ISWAP fighters attacked another base near the Sambisa Forest, causing unspecified casualties among soldiers and militia members. Boko Haram also targeted a base near the Cameroon border, destroying military equipment.

Since 2009, jihadist violence in northeastern Nigeria has claimed around 40,000 lives and displaced two million people. The situation has prompted military coalitions in the region, although their effectiveness has weakened recently.
