ISWAP Attack in Borno Claims Major and Multiple Soldiers

On Sunday, an attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in Borno State led to significant casualties, including the death of Major U Mairiga. The assault occurred during the early hours when insurgents launched an offensive at a base located at Banki Junction along the Bama-Gwoza road.

Sources indicated that the attackers opened fire sporadically, resulting in heavy casualties, although the exact number of soldiers killed remains unclear, with reports suggesting that several fled into nearby bushes. This incident follows a recent deadly attack on a military base in Jakana, Kaga Local Government Area, where seven military personnel, including a newly promoted lieutenant colonel, were killed in an ambush.

The resurgence of ISWAP's activities in the region has raised concerns, particularly following the death of former Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, which reportedly strengthened ISWAP's presence around Lake Chad and led to the defection of hundreds of fighters.
