Ekiti State Launches Restorative Justice Framework Initiative

The Ekiti State government has commenced the implementation of its restorative justice framework, marked by a stakeholders' summit and capacity-building program. This initiative, organized by the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice in partnership with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, aims to deepen the understanding of restorative justice and create a coordinated approach within the state's criminal justice system.

Key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Justice, police, correctional services, and traditional institutions, participated in the summit. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata, SAN, emphasized the government's commitment through the enactment of the Ekiti State Administration of Criminal Justice (Second Amendment) Law, 2026.

He noted that successful implementation requires strong institutions and effective collaboration. Lead Consultant Caroline Etuk explained that restorative justice offers an alternative to lengthy court trials, while Kumbo Ezeh highlighted the historical use of similar approaches in Nigerian society.

Dr Modupe Nancy Wiwoloku, the pioneer Director of the Restorative Justice and Community Service Department, described the engagement as significant.
