Ekiti State Government Warns Against High House Rents

The Ekiti State Government has issued a warning to landlords and estate agents regarding the charging of "outrageous" house rents, particularly in cities and communities that host tertiary institutions. Dr Gboyega Oloniyo, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing and Mortgage Development, described these high rents as burdensome and unacceptable.

He spoke during a sensitization program in Iyin Ekiti on Friday, themed ‘Connecting estate agents and making accommodation accessible to all.’ Oloniyo indicated the government's intention to regulate rents and establish a rent tribunal to ensure fairness. He urged landlords and estate agents to charge rents responsibly and prioritize residents' welfare.

The Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Oba Adeniyi Ajakaye, expressed community support for the government's initiatives. Mr Oluwasanmi Adeeko, Chairman of the Real Estate Agents in Ekiti State, affirmed their association's commitment to cooperating with the government to make housing more affordable.

Participants at the meeting called for a task force and rent regulation measures.
