ADC Petitions AI Over El-Rufai's Unlawful Detention

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally petitioned the African Union and other human rights organizations concerning the detention of its leader, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, who is also a former governor of Kaduna State. El-Rufai has been held in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for 30 days without formal charges or arraignment.

The ADC describes this detention as illegal and unconstitutional, alleging that it is an attempt to coerce El-Rufai into abandoning his political choices. The party has called on the ICPC to uphold the rule of law and release El-Rufai immediately to prepare his defense.

They argue that the ongoing detention of citizens without due process is a hallmark of dictatorship and poses a threat to democracy in Nigeria. The ADC emphasizes that fundamental rights, including the right to political participation and fair hearing, are guaranteed by the constitution and should not be compromised.
