Tambuwal Critiques Rushed Electoral Act Amendments

Aminu Tambuwal, a member of the Nigerian Senate and former governor of Sokoto State, expressed that the recent amendments to the Electoral Act were forced upon lawmakers. In an interview with the BBC, he criticized the leadership of the Senate for hastily pushing through the amendment process without proper consideration.

Despite strong objections from minority lawmakers, tensions escalated on the Senate floor as opposition members demanded a review of the controversial sections of the bill. The amendments include a proposal for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adjust the notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days, which is intended to align electoral timelines with the upcoming Ramadan fast period.

Tambuwal warned that these developments could create opportunities for manipulation within the electoral process.
