Tambuwal Critiques Senate for Rushed Electoral Act Changes

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a member of the Nigerian Senate, has publicly criticized the Senate leadership for what he describes as a rushed amendment to the electoral act. In an interview with the BBC, he expressed concern over the push to alter a specific section of the electoral act without proper amendments, despite strong objections from minority lawmakers.

The contentious amendment proposes that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) adjust the notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days, a change intended to align electoral timelines with the upcoming Ramadan period. Tambuwal warned that the rushed process could create opportunities for manipulation and electoral malpractice.

He emphasized the need for an open vote to allow lawmakers to publicly declare their positions on the amendment, reflecting the Senate's earlier stance on the matter.
