ADC Accuses Tinubu of Undermining Nigeria's Democracy

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining Nigeria's democratic process following his rapid assent to amendments to the Electoral Act. In a statement issued by Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the president's actions as alarming and indicative of a move to weaken public confidence in the electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party criticized the introduction of ambiguous processes for the collection and transmission of election results, arguing that this undermines the integrity of the electoral system. The ADC emphasized that the amendments do not align with the goal of consolidating democracy, but rather introduce corruption and excessive discretion in the electoral process.

They raised concerns about the urgency of the amendments, noting that the APC controls a significant number of state governments and the national assembly. The ADC warned that these developments could heighten political tensions and lead to a loss of faith in electoral safeguards, pledging to mobilize citizens to protect their voting rights and uphold democratic principles.
