Nigerian Government Prioritizes Local Manufacturing with "Nigeria-First" Procurement Framework

Senator John Owan Enoh, representing the Federal Government, highlighted the implementation of a "Nigeria-first" procurement framework targeting key sectors during the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Lagos Province 35 Economic Summit. The government aims to leverage public procurement as a strategic tool to enhance local manufacturing, reduce the country's reliance on imports, and support domestic industries with strong potential.

Enoh emphasized the importance of redesigning the procurement framework in collaboration with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to align it with the Nigeria-first policy. The government's approach involves harmonizing Nigeria's budget across fiscal years, ensuring realistic budget projections, and addressing economic challenges.

Enoh stressed the significance of promoting local production in sectors like textiles, apparel, automotive, medical equipment, and furniture through effective public procurement strategies to unlock private investment and accelerate domestic value chain development. Additionally, he discussed economic forecasts, including expectations of a weaker US dollar, fluctuating oil prices, and the need for appropriate budget adjustments to mitigate economic impacts.
