CAN Urges Northern Christians to Self-Defend Amid Attacks

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Christians in the northern part of Nigeria to take proactive measures to defend themselves against persistent attacks, particularly following a recent incident in Angwan Rukuba, Plateau State, where 20 people were killed and several others injured. This attack occurred around 8 PM and has heightened fears among residents, raising fresh security concerns ahead of the Easter celebrations.

Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, assured that Nigerian security forces would heighten surveillance and military efforts to ensure citizens can celebrate Easter without fear. Joseph Hayab, chairman of the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, emphasized that Christians should not allow the wave of killings to intimidate them and noted that the community is beginning to organize itself against attacks.

Brigadier General John Sura supported the idea of self-defense and urged the state government to strengthen local security structures, including community security outfits, to provide additional layers of defense.
