Oyo Assembly Supports UN Probe into Oriire Abduction

The Oyo State House of Assembly has aligned with Governor Seyi Makinde in demanding a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of a pupil and teacher in Oriire Local Government Area. The assembly issued a statement on Tuesday, asserting that an independent probe is essential to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and to prevent similar attacks in the future.

Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the Speaker, highlighted the need to strengthen Nigeria's security framework and noted that mass abductions of schoolchildren have become a disturbing pattern in the country.

The assembly's resolution responded to the Senate's advice against pursuing a UN investigation, which they viewed as a patriotic effort to promote transparency and accountability. They acknowledged the sacrifices of security personnel involved in the rescue operation and emphasized the importance of international collaboration to address the transnational threat of terrorism affecting schools.

The assembly also called for improved welfare and training for security personnel.
