Oyo State Launches Inquiry into Oriire Abduction Incident

On May 15, 2026, an abduction incident occurred in Oriire Local Government Area, resulting in the kidnapping of students and teachers, with two victims killed by terrorists. Following their rescue after 56 days, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde called for an investigation by the international community and the United Nations, which faced criticism from the Presidency for being politically motivated.

To further this inquiry, Makinde inaugurated an eight-member Judicial Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Prof. Mojeed Owoade, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.

The commission's mandate includes establishing facts surrounding the abduction, identifying lapses in security, and recommending measures to enhance the protection of schools and communities. The commission has invited public submissions of memoranda and evidence to assist in its investigation, particularly focusing on the events leading to the abduction and the response of relevant authorities.
