NSIB Reveals Causes of Enugu Air Runway Overrun Incident

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) released a preliminary report on the July 23, 2026, runway overrun incident involving an Enugu Air Embraer ERJ 170-100LR at Oba Akenzua II Airport, Benin, Edo State. The aircraft, registered as 5N-ENR, was operating scheduled flight ENU4264 from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with 63 passengers and five crew members on board.

All 68 occupants were evacuated without injury after the aircraft overran the runway, striking approach-lighting installations and two fixed concrete structures. The landing occurred under challenging conditions, with a wet runway and a tailwind of approximately 12 knots.

The crew reported that the autobrake was not functioning, necessitating manual braking. The aircraft touched down at about 138.2 knots groundspeed.

The NSIB noted that air traffic control had informed the crew of the wet runway but did not provide a Runway Condition Report. The report also highlighted issues with weather information equipment and obstructed visibility from the control tower.
