Activist Sues INEC Over Enugu North Bye-Election Delay

Gideon Okei Agbo, a human rights activist and political affairs analyst, has initiated legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its failure to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacancy in the Enugu North senatorial district. This vacancy arose after the death of Senator Okei Ezea.

During a press conference held in Enugu, Agbo emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution mandates INEC to organize bye-elections within a specific timeframe when a vacancy occurs, as stated in Section 76(2). He argued that the delay in conducting the election deprives the people of effective representation.

Agbo's legal team has filed the suit to urge INEC to fulfill its constitutional duty and to ensure that the electoral process is initiated without further delay. He called for immediate action to restore democratic participation and legislative representation in the Enugu North senatorial zone, highlighting the importance of public confidence in the electoral process.
