INEC Schedules Bye-Elections for June 20, 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that bye-elections will take place on June 20, 2026, in six states across Nigeria. This electoral exercise aims to fill vacant seats in the National Assembly and State Assemblies.

The states involved include Kebbi, Kano, Ondo, Rivers, Nasarawa, and Enugu. The elections will cover four senatorial districts and various House of Representatives and state assembly seats.

Notably, the Ondo State seat became vacant following Senator Jimoh Ibrahim's transition to a permanent representative role. The Rivers State seat was left empty due to the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, while Senator Godiya Akwashika of Nasarawa State also passed away.

The Enugu State seat became vacant due to the death of Senator Okei Ezea. Additionally, the Kano State will hold House of Representatives elections, and Kebbi State will conduct polls for its vacant state assembly seat.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan made the announcement, indicating that these elections will coincide with the Ekiti State governorship election.
