Enugu State Launches Strategy to End Open Defecation

Enugu State is advancing a multi-sectoral strategy to eradicate open defecation, aiming for total elimination by 2030. This initiative was discussed during a workshop held on April 21-22, organized by the Enugu State Ministry of Water Resources in partnership with UNICEF.

Prof. Chinedu Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government, stressed the importance of collective ownership of the Open Defecation Free (ODF) agenda, highlighting that open defecation is a public health emergency and a significant challenge.

Governor Peter Mbah's administration is committed to a zero-tolerance policy against practices undermining public health. The strategy involves engaging the private sector to establish water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, particularly in urban centers.

UNICEF's WASH Chief, Engr. Emili Rand, expressed optimism about the 2025-2030 roadmap, while local stakeholders discussed enhancing public toilet provisions and sanitation services for underserved households.

The workshop underscored the critical need for collaboration to achieve ODF status in Enugu State.
