Enugu State Advocates Multi-Sectoral Approach to ODF

Enugu State is advocating for a multi-sectoral approach to eradicate open defecation, as emphasized by Professor Chidieber Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government, during a workshop held on April 21-22, 2026. The workshop aimed to review the state's Open Defecation Free (ODF) roadmap, targeting total eradication of open defecation practices by 2030.

The initiative is organized by the Enugu State Ministry of Water Resources in partnership with UNICEF. Professor Onyia highlighted the importance of collective ownership of the ODF plan and the need for collaboration among government, communities, and the private sector.

Engr Ben Collin Ndu Jnr, the State Commissioner for Water Resources, expressed the current administration's commitment to ending open defecation. The workshop also included discussions on improving public toilet facilities and sanitation services, particularly in urban areas.

The ODF project aims to enhance the capacity of state officials involved in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives.
