Enugu Re-Run-Election: Drama as INEC Declares Labour Party Candidate Serving Jail Term Winner

The Enugu South Urban Constituency rerun election saw drama unfold as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Labour Party candidate Ngene Bright Emeka, who is currently serving a jail term, as the winner. Ngene had been sentenced to prison by the South Magistrate Court in July 2024.

The election was ordered after the 2023 election in eight polling units was nullified due to communal crisis. Despite facing disruptions since February 2024, this was the fourth attempt at the election.

INEC spokesperson Sam Olumekun confirmed Ngene's victory over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate. The election results in 16 constituencies across 13 states were also announced, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) securing 12 victories.

INEC is expected to announce a new date to complete the elections declared inconclusive.
