Enugu State Targets 1,000 Megawatts Power Generation

Enugu State is on track to achieve its target of generating 1,000 megawatts of power, leveraging its abundant coal resources, as confirmed by Samuel Okoro, special adviser to Governor Peter Mbah. During a press briefing at the government house in Enugu, Okoro highlighted the worsening power supply across Nigeria, which has seen generation drop below 3,000 megawatts.

He emphasized that the state government is committed to utilizing its vast coal deposits, estimated at over 300 million tons, to support industrial growth and tackle energy shortages. Okoro noted that the government has initiated efforts to combat illegal mining, having shut down 40 illegal mining operations and prosecuting offenders.

Additionally, the government is conducting geological explorations to accurately assess mineral deposits across the state. Okoro reassured that the policies in place are not merely political statements but actionable plans already in progress to ensure the successful generation of power from coal.
