Environment Minister Calls for Media Action on Climate Crisis

On Wednesday, during a media engagement workshop in Abuja, Nigeria's Environment Minister, Balarab Abba Lawal, called on the media to take an active role in confronting the country's growing environmental challenges. He stressed the importance of responsible reporting to raise public awareness, which is crucial for safeguarding Nigeria's ecological future.

Lawal highlighted various environmental threats facing Nigeria, including desertification in the northern region, severe flooding, erosion in the southeast and south-south, oil pollution in the Niger Delta, and widespread deforestation. He noted that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration's renewed hope agenda aims to promote environmental sustainability and support economic development, with initiatives planned for 2025, including agro-climate resilience projects.

Lawal urged journalists to adopt data-driven reporting approaches to highlight environmental challenges and encouraged the use of digital and social media platforms to engage Nigeria's youth in climate action. He reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to improving access to environmental data and resources to support effective reporting.
