Abia Communities Seek Help as Erosion Destroys Homes

Five communities in Uzuakoli, Abia, specifically Amamba, Ngwu, Amankwo, Agbozu, and Eluama, are urgently seeking intervention from the Federal Government, Abia State, and Bende Local Government Area due to severe erosion that has led to the collapse of six bungalows. The erosion issues have persisted for over eight years, with community leaders like Nelson Umezurike, President General of Ohabuike Amamba, stating that the community has spent over N7 million on temporary repairs, which were quickly undone by flooding.

Umezurike attributed the erosion's exacerbation to road contractors who improperly managed drainage systems. In 2019, the community mobilized over N60 million for palliative measures after seven buildings collapsed, but these efforts were also unsuccessful.

The community is appealing to various government officials, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Gov. Alex Otti, for assistance, as the situation is increasingly rendering residents homeless.
