Esiovwa-Thompson Wins Nigeria's First Gold in Fencing

Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson won Nigeria's first-ever gold medal in the men's U-23 epee at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships held at Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City, Lagos. Competing for Nigeria for the first time after switching allegiance from England, the 16-year-old fencer defeated Indian champion Lokesh Vemani 15–5 in the final.

Esiovwa-Thompson's journey to the gold medal included victories over three Indian opponents and a dominant performance throughout the tournament. He started in Pool 4, finishing unbeaten, and advanced through the rounds by defeating South Africa’s Karabo Mathobela 15–7 in the round of 16, India’s Shivaansh Kapoor 15–2 in the quarterfinal, and Ashwini Shaurya 15–11 in the semifinal.

This victory not only marks a historic moment for Nigerian fencing but also establishes Esiovwa-Thompson as the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at any international fencing event. Prior to this, he had achieved success representing England, including a gold medal at the 2022 Wratislavia Challenge.
