Nigeria to Launch 90,000 km Optic Fiber Network by 2026

The Nigerian government is set to implement an ambitious 90,000 km optic fiber network aimed at enhancing broadband penetration across the country, particularly in underserved and unserved areas. Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Minister Bosun Tijani announced that the project, which will augment the existing 35,000 km network, has secured necessary funding and will be executed by Bridge Open Access, an independent Special Purpose Vehicle established under Project BRIDGE.

The project, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is scheduled to begin implementation in October 2026 at an estimated cost of $2 billion, funded through a public-private partnership. The initiative aims to extend Nigeria's total fiber backbone from approximately 35,000 km to 125,000 km, making it one of the longest networks in Africa.

The infrastructure strategy will combine terrestrial fiber, mobile towers, and satellite technology to ensure comprehensive coverage, connecting every state, local government area, ward, and over 200,000 social, educational, and healthcare institutions.
