EU Proposes Burutu Port as Maritime Hub in Delta State

The European Union has identified Burutu Port in Delta State as a potential international maritime hub under a proposed Sea Link project. This initiative aims to connect Lagos State, the Niger Delta, and communities along the River Niger.

The EU delegation, led by Massimo De Luca, met with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Thursday in Asaba. De Luca emphasized Burutu's strategic location and its potential to support maritime and inland waterway transportation.

He stated that the project could transform Burutu into an international port, facilitating ocean-going vessels and international trade, akin to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium. The Sea Link project is part of the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy and aims to shift traffic from roads to waterways, creating new business opportunities and stimulating economic activity.

Discussions on the project's financing structure are ongoing, involving a consortium of several parties. Governor Oborevwori, represented by his deputy Monday Onyeme, expressed support for the initiative, highlighting Delta's commitment to the blue economy.
