EU Lawmakers Advocate for European Defence Union

European Union lawmakers are pushing for the establishment of a European Defence Union, emphasizing the need for an independent military structure that allows member states to respond to emergencies without reliance on the U.S.-led NATO. Key figures in this initiative include Michael Gahler and Tobias Cremer, who warn that dependence on the United States poses risks to European security.

Proposed measures include the creation of a joint command system and rapid response forces, with the aim of saving €100 billion annually through coordinated military procurement. German MEP Luka Sieper addressed the sensitive issue of nuclear deterrence, stating that while the ultimate goal is global nuclear disarmament, Europe may require its own deterrent capabilities in light of hostile powers possessing arms.

This initiative coincides with the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 1950, which laid the groundwork for modern European integration and the European Union.
