EU Urges Nigerian Youth for Transparent Governance

Laolu Olawumi, the Programme Manager and Governance Adviser for Democracy, Rule of Law, and Gender at the European Union Delegation to Nigeria, addressed young Nigerians in Abuja, urging them to demand transparency and accountability from democratic institutions. Speaking at a Model Legislative Assembly Session organized by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), Olawumi emphasized that Nigeria's democracy can only strengthen if informed and principled youth insist on accountable governance.

She encouraged participants of a recent legislative internship program at the National Assembly to utilize their acquired knowledge to engage in governance and hold institutions accountable. Olawumi stated that democracy extends beyond elections to include lawmaking, oversight, and citizen participation.

Clement Nwankwo, Executive Director of PLAC, highlighted that the internship exposed participants to legislative processes, enabling them to contribute effectively to national development. The Clerk of the National Assembly acknowledged the program as a key platform for nurturing young professionals in legislative practice.
