Labaran Maku Defects to SDP Ahead of 2027 Elections

Labaran Maku, a former Minister and Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, announced his defection from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Tuesday. During a press conference in Nasarawa Eggon, he expressed his commitment to mobilizing substantial support for the SDP in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Maku emphasized that his move aims to contribute meaningfully to the growth of the SDP and strengthen its presence across Nasarawa State and the country. He praised the late Akwashiki as the best senator for Nasarawa North and highlighted the SDP's existing presence in 13 local government areas, noting its achievements in public service, including employment and infrastructure development.

Maku hinted at a potential bid for the Nasarawa North senatorial seat, contingent upon party approval and the Independent National Electoral Commission's regulations. He also urged the state governor to avoid imposing a successor, advocating for democratic principles and good governance.

Maku's resignation from the PDP was attributed to prolonged crises within the party.
