Former Thai MP Shoots Local Official Over Money Dispute

On Monday, former Thai MP Chalong Riewrang shot and killed local government official Thongchai Yenprasert in Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok, due to a financial dispute. The incident occurred in broad daylight outside a government building.

Chalong confessed to journalists at the police station that he attempted to discuss money with Thongchai, who refused to engage. Following a confrontation, Chalong pulled out his gun and fired, claiming he did not aim to shoot.

Thongchai was struck in the neck and later died from his injuries. His driver was also wounded but survived surgery.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that only on-duty officials are permitted to carry firearms in public and confirmed that full legal action would be pursued against Chalong, who admitted to being the sole shooter. The dispute reportedly involved several million baht that Thongchai had borrowed from Chalong.

The incident has raised concerns over gun control in Thailand, which has a high rate of firearm ownership.
