Explosion at Liege Synagogue Sparks Counterterror Probe

On Monday morning, around 4:00 AM local time, an explosion rocked a synagogue located on Rue Leon Fredericq in Liege, Belgium. The blast shattered windows of the synagogue and damaged nearby properties, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

The local authorities, including the police, confirmed the incident and cordoned off the area for safety. A counterterrorism investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the explosion and identify those responsible.

Liege's mayor, Willi Demey, condemned the incident, describing it as an extremely violent act of antisemitism that contradicts the city's tradition of tolerance and respect. He warned against the importation of external conflicts, referencing ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Belgium's Interior Minister, Bernard Quintin, denounced the attack as an abject antisemitic act directly targeting the Jewish community in the country. The synagogue, inaugurated in 1899, is a designated historical monument in the Wallonia region and houses a museum dedicated to the Jewish community in Liege.
