PEBEC to Equip Truckers with Body Cameras Against Extortion

The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) announced plans to equip truckers and freight forwarders with body cameras to collect evidence against officials engaged in extortion at illegal checkpoints along the Apapa Tin Port Corridor. Zahrah Audu, Director General of PEBEC, disclosed this during a press session at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

She noted that previous enforcement visits in January, March, and July yielded no arrests, as officials were not caught in the act of extortion. The initiative aims to provide clear evidence for prosecution and address the challenges faced by truckers.

PEBEC also plans to erect signage at legal checkpoints with QR codes linking to a reporting portal. Additionally, the council is working to reduce Nigeria's average cargo dwell time from 21 days to a target of seven days by April 2025, as part of broader reforms to improve the business environment and tackle issues related to extortion and inefficiencies in the port system.
