Video of Mass Killing Misattributed to Nigeria Attacks

A video claiming to depict recent mass killings in Nigeria has been fact-checked and found to be misleading. The video, which garnered 1.2 million views and was shared widely on social media, was linked to a user named Daniel Somtochukwu.

Investigations using open-source intelligence tools revealed that the footage is not connected to any recent attacks in Nigeria. Instead, it traces back to an earlier post from June 13, 2025, showing violence during an armed attack in Mali.

The video was misrepresented as evidence of current violence by Fulani militia in Nigeria. Further analysis identified the video as part of a larger narrative involving the Jama Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated group operating in the Sahel region.

The video has circulated online since at least 2025, and there is no evidence linking it to any recent attacks in Nigeria.
