FAI Withdraws Support for Infantino's FIFA Presidency Bid

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has officially withdrawn its endorsement of Gianni Infantino’s bid to remain FIFA president, complicating his re-election efforts ahead of the 2027 elections. Previously supportive of Infantino, the FAI's decision stemmed from significant concerns regarding FIFA’s governance and transparency.

The FAI's board decided to retract its letter of support and communicated this decision to FIFA, citing “Recent events have caused significant concern over governance, transparency and lack of proper consultation.” This change follows a leaked open letter from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation, which expressed a loss of trust in Infantino due to perceived deception. The controversy includes the abandoned sale of shares in FIFA’s commercial operations to private investors, which faced widespread condemnation.

The Welsh FA and English FA have also withdrawn their support, making the FAI the latest national association to take such a stance. The Irish FA has not withdrawn support but aligns with UEFA’s position, further threatening Infantino's re-election prospects.
