FAW Withdraws Support for Infantino's Re-Election Bid

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has officially withdrawn its endorsement of Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election as FIFA President for the term 2027-2031. This decision marks the FAW as the first home nation to remove its support, driven by a loss of confidence in Infantino's leadership.

The FAW's statement highlighted failures in governance, stakeholder management, and sound judgment as reasons for their stance. Infantino recently faced significant backlash from football stakeholders, leading him to abandon plans to sell minority shareholdings in FIFA competitions to private investment funds, a proposal that was universally rejected.

UEFA had warned of a potential boycott of future World Cups and other FIFA competitions if the proposal proceeded. The FAW emphasized that while innovation and financial sustainability are important, the primary consideration in all decisions must be the interests of football.

The withdrawal of support from the FAW adds to the mounting pressure on Infantino as he approaches re-election.
